How do you fit in?  

Reporting to the Manager, Risk, this position will be responsible for counterparty contracting and credit risk management required in our energy marketing business.  This includes reviewing and recommending credit language for Gas EDI, ISDA and other master agreements.  The Senior Risk Analyst, Credit will also have lead accountability for Credit reviews of counterparties, negotiating credit thresholds with counterparties, and streamlining and managing credit exposure tracking and reporting. This individual will also be involved in other special projects including, but not limited to, updating risk governance documentation, and acting as backup for middle office reporting.

What you’ll be doing:  

  • Working with Heartland legal to review and recommend credit clauses and language in commodity master agreements, including ISDA, Gas EDI, NAESB, and other standard tariff contracts
  • Streamlining and maintaining a database listing all commodity contracts and their associated key terms
  • Streamlining and maintaining a library of standard credit clauses and terms used in master agreements, as well as a standard Heartland form of master agreements 
  • Acting as primary credit contact with counterparties, including responding to questions, coordinating sharing of Heartland financial information, and negotiating credit terms where appropriate
  • Acting as subject matter expert on credit terms in all existing Heartland commodity master agreements, including transport and transmission
  • Updating and managing Heartland’s database of counterparty credit threshold and collateral calculations
  • Maintaining and updating the Heartland counterparty credit review models
  • Performing credit reviews on new counterparties and periodic review updates on existing counterparties, including recommending credit thresholds
  • Running the weekly credit and contracting coordination meeting, which includes legal and commercial representatives.  This meeting updates progress in contracting and ranks priorities for outstanding credit and contracting initiatives
  • Assisting with the preparation and updating of risk governance documentation, including risk policies and procedures documents
  • Presenting credit recommendations to the Director, Treasury and Corporate Planning, the CFO, and the Heartland Risk Management Committee when credit threshold recommendations require their approval
  • Assist with other duties and projects as required

What you must have: 

  • Bachelors’ degree in Business, Commerce or related discipline
  • 5 -10 years of experience working in commodity contracting and credit risk management
  • Experience and detailed knowledge of ISDA and Gas EDI contracts
  • Past experience and familiarity with credit risk analysis
  • Past experience with tracking and reporting for credit thresholds and collateral
  • Demonstrated ability and experience with contract credit terms negotiations
  • Excellent problem solving and decision-making skills and the ability to multi-task
  • Advanced MS excel skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to deal with people at all levels of the organization and with multi-disciplinary work teams
  • Proven business acumen, a proactive approach to issue resolution, and a commitment to excellence and innovation
  • Previous experience in the power generation industry is preferred
  • Previous experience working directly with the credit functionality of commodity trading risk management systems such as Pioneer or Allegro is an asset
