How do you fit in?  

The Senior Financial Reporting Analyst will be an integral part of assisting in Heartland’s financial reporting, corporate accounting and internal controls and process design functions. This role is ideal for those who thrive in a hands-on, fast paced, growing environment, enjoy wearing multiple hats, and have a passion for identifying gaps, searching for process efficiencies and enhancements, and ensuring accuracy.  The successful candidate enjoys analyzing data and identifying areas of improvement as well as possesses the ability to plan and execute projects from start to finish.

What you’ll be doing:  

Key areas of focus for this role include:

  • Assist in the preparation of Heartland’s financial statements, management discussion and analysis, and other reports, as required, with support from company accountants
  • Lead the scoping, documentation and design and implementation of internal controls environment including testing of key controls and system-based controls
  • Develop corporate IFRS accounting policy library applicable to the Company
  • Ad-hoc tax provision preparation and reporting
  • Partner with stakeholders in integration of accounting modules in the Company’s accounting system
  • Liaise with company accountants to obtain an understanding of the business and provide guidance on accounting changes or policies
  • Provide advice and guidance on accounting matters including IFRS accounting standard updates and complex technical accounting issues, and provide documented conclusions to management in a timely manner
  • Ad-hoc management reporting requirements
  • Assist in the coordination of financial statement, government, and joint venture audits
  • Provide support to accounts payable function in expense system implementation and process documentation

What you must have:

  • CPA designation, in addition to articling experience with a Big 4, Canadian accounting firm
  • 7+ years of experience (preferably 4+ post designation)
  • A motivated, self-starting attitude with the ability to identify areas of focus and initiative to lead projects from the ground up
  • In depth and up to date technical knowledge of accounting principles and Canadian regulatory compliance requirements including detailed knowledge of IFRS and controls framework
  • Aptitude for systems and developing reports as they apply to the accounting function
  • Advanced MS excel skills
  • Personality and communication skills to work at all levels of the company, quickly establishing credibility and trust with all stakeholders
  • Eye for detail while also having a broad conceptual understanding of the application of accounting and materiality
  • Problem-solving skills with complex accounting transactions, and willingness to analyze and guide accountants to appropriate resolution of journal entry corrections and reconciliations
  • Exceptional skills in effectively managing multiple tasks within defined timelines
  • Proven business acumen, a proactive approach to issue resolution, and a commitment to excellence and innovation

Where you’ll be working:

This position is located in our Head Office in Calgary, Alberta. Currently, this position is eligible for our Hybrid Work Arrangement schedule whereby some remote work from home days is optional.
