How do you fit in?  

Reporting to the Manager, Operations Accounting, the Operations Accountant is responsible for providing financial accounting and commercial contract analysis support to Heartland Generation’s site operations and the accounting leadership team. This position provides financial accounting, analysis and reporting as well as budgeting and forecasting for Heartland Generation’s Power Plants. This role has a primary focus on the execution of monthly reporting and monthly procedures, monthly billing, and internal control procedures.  The position is supported by the Manager, Operations Accounting, and may receive execution guidance from experienced Operations Accountants in completion of work responsibilities. Some interpretation of accounting implications and application of commercial contracts is required.  Responsible for coordinating routine work processes and procedures within the work group and assuring all necessary day-to-day business processes are completed in an accurate and timely manner. The position provides an opportunity to gain experience in full cycle planning, reporting, and forecasting for power plants in the Alberta market.

What you’ll be doing:  

  • Understand and work jointly with the Managers, Operational Accounting, Operations Accountants and Site Operations Managers, to assist the Plants in delivering on their financial objectives.  
  • Perform financial accounting and financial/management reporting for Power Plants.
  • Prepare journal entries, reconciliations, and continuity schedules.
  • Prepare timely and accurate settlement invoices and accruals using billing models, as applicable.
  • Prepare reports and analysis under commercial agreements.
  • Complete variance analysis and provide explanations between Business Plan, Forecasts and Actual results.
  • Prepare business planning, forecasting, and variance analysis for Power Plants for both internal and external stakeholders.
  • Prepare and deliver timely and accurate earnings and cash components of the Income Statement(s) and Balance Sheet(s) for Power Plants.
  • Look for opportunities to provide process improvements and efficiencies while supporting and driving operational accounting best practices.
  • Fulfill Internal Controls Compliance requirements by participating in the documentation controls and processing primarily relating to financial accounting and reporting, ensuring accuracy.
  • Provide and support audit process.
  • Implement new or revised accounting processes.
  • Monitor Heartland’s performance and industry trends to identify potential impacts on financial accounting and reporting for the assigned plants.
  • Apply plant asset knowledge, initiative and strong interpersonal skills to provide quality service deliverables.
  • Actively support other Operations Accountants to effectively cover-off absences and maintain workflow.

What you must have:

  • Undergraduate degree in Commerce or Business with a preferred major in accounting
  • Completion, or near completion of a professional accounting designation
  • 5 - 10 years of experience in an accounting environment involving preparation of financial statements and management reporting as well as working within a Corporate Financial Management system
  • A keen and diligent eye for data integrity and output accuracy
  • Intermediate to Advanced Excel skills
  • Highly motivated to learn, and takes initiative to advance business knowledge and acumen
  • Experience with SAGE Cloud accounting software, contract interpretation and application is an asset
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, applying good judgment and decision making
  • Flexibility to work flexible hours during peak periods (i.e. month end; quarter end; business plan preparation)
  • Occasional travel to Heartland’s various power plants may be required
