How you fit in?
Reporting to the Manager, Operations Accounting, the Operations Accountant is responsible for providing commercial and financial accounting support to Heartland Generation’s site operations, accounting leadership team and Joint Venture partners. This position provides financial accounting, analysis and reporting as well as budgeting and forecasting for Heartland Generation’s Independent Power Plants (IPP). This role includes playing a primary role in the interpretation, determination of accounting implications and application of commercial contracts.

What you’ll be doing:
• Perform financial accounting and financial/management reporting for IPP Operations and external partners.
• Prepare journal entries, reconciliations, and continuity schedules
• Prepare timely and accurate settlement invoices and accruals using billing models, as applicable
• Prepare all reports and analysis required under commercial agreements, and present to partners as required
• Complete variance analysis and provide explanations between Business Plan, Forecasts and Actual results
• Prepare business planning, forecasting, and variance analysis for IPP Operations challenging assumptions and financial outcomes, for both internal and external stakeholders
• Prepare and deliver timely and accurate earnings and cash components of the Income Statement(s) and Balance Sheet(s) for IPP.
• Look for opportunities to provide process improvements and efficiencies while supporting and driving operational accounting best practices.
• Fulfill Internal Controls Compliance requirements by participating in the documentation controls and processing primarily relating to financial accounting and reporting ensuring accuracy
• Act as primary auditor liaison for IPP areas of responsibility.
• Communicate complex accounting policies/procedures effectively to non-financial employees
• Act as liaison between site(s) and corporate finance
• Implement new or revised accounting processes
• Monitor Heartland’s performance and industry trends to identify potential impacts on financial accounting and reporting
• Function as a subject matter expert on integrated problem solving and effective processes related to financial accounting and reporting and contract interpretation and application considering potential opportunities
• Apply plant asset knowledge, initiative and strong interpersonal skills to provide quality service deliverables

What you have:
• Undergraduate degree in Commerce or Business with a preferred major in accounting
• Completion (or near completion) of a professional accounting designation
• 3 - 5 years of experience in an accounting environment involving preparation of financial statements and management reporting as well as working within a multi entity Corporate Financial Management system
• A keen and diligent eye for data integrity and output accuracy
• Intermediate to Advanced Excel skills and application (pivot tables, formulas, graphs, etc.)
• Highly motivated to learn, and takes initiative to advance business knowledge and acumen
• Excellent communication skills and ability to communicate complex accounting processes to non-financial employees and leaders
• Experience with contract interpretation and application, and experience with Joint Ventures is a definite asset
• Ability to work independently with minimal supervision applying good judgment and strong decision making
• Flexibility to work hours during peak periods (i.e. month end; quarter end; business plan preparation)
• Occasional travel to Heartland’s various power plants may be required
