How do you fit in?

Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer, the Manager, Financial Reporting and Corporate Accounting  will be responsible for oversight of Heartland’s financial reporting, corporate accounting, internal controls and tax compliance functions. This role is ideal for those who thrive in a hands-on, fast paced, growing environment, enjoy wearing multiple hats, and have a passion for identifying gaps, searching for process efficiencies and enhancements, and ensuring accuracy.  The successful candidate enjoys analyzing data and sharing their knowledge.  The position provides leadership to a small team including Financial Reporting, Corporate Accounting, and Accounts Payable and works alongside other company finance leaders to ensure efficient, controlled and reliable outcomes for company reporting.

What you’ll be doing:

• Responsible for the preparation of Heartland’s financial statements, management discussion and analysis, private equity reporting, and other reports, as required.
• Provide advice and guidance on accounting matters including IFRS accounting standard updates, complex technical accounting issues, and establishing best practices though analysis, and development of reporting.
• Develop and deploy fit for purpose policies and procedures to improve efficiency and effectiveness.
• Oversight and continued development of an effective internal controls environment, including the design, documentation and testing of key controls.
• Oversee budgeting and reporting of Company G&A expenditures and oversee and ensure appropriate corporate cost recovery allocations and invoicing.
• Manage monthly closing schedule and oversee completeness and content of reconciliations and analysis of company accounts.
• Assume a project manager role for initiatives within the Accounting function and act as an advisor on cross-functional or cross-company projects.
• Lead the coordination of financial statement, government, and joint venture audits.
• Lead Heartland’s corporate tax compliance, GST, and property tax.
• Oversee accounts payable team and processes from requisition to payment, including validation and oversight of vendor maintenance controls.  
• Provide leadership, coaching and professional mentoring to the accounting professionals on your team.

What you must have:

• CPA designation, in addition to articling experience with a Big 4 Canadian accounting firm.
• 10+ years post-qualification experience, preferably with in the power, midstream or oil & gas industries.
• A hands-on management style and willingness to engage company employees to drive results.
• Ability to analyze data and system capabilities.
• Personality and communication skills to work at all levels of the company, quickly establishing credibility and trust with all stakeholders.
• In depth and up to date technical knowledge of accounting principles and Canadian regulatory compliance requirements including detailed knowledge of IFRS.
• Eye for detail while also having a broad conceptual understanding of the application of accounting and materiality.
• Problem-solving skills with complex accounting transactions, and willingness to analyze and guide accountants to appropriate resolution of journal entry corrections and reconciliations.
• Exceptional skills in effectively managing multiple tasks within defined timelines.
• Proven business acumen, a proactive approach to issue resolution, and a commitment to excellence and innovation.

Where you’ll be working:

This position will be located in our Head Office in Devon Tower, Calgary, Alberta.  Occasional travel may be required. Existing and well-documented COVID-19 Guidelines and Protocols remain in place across all Heartland Generation worksites, and we continue to follow the guidance provided by Alberta Health Services.

This position is eligible for our Hybrid Work Arrangement schedule whereby some remote work from home days are optional.
