How do you fit in?

Under the leadership of the Electrical Engineering Manager, the Electrical, Instrumentation and Controls Engineer will provide technical support for Heartland Generation’s generating stations.  This support will include technical research, evaluation of equipment options, cost estimating, troubleshooting and regulatory compliance.  As the project lifecycle advances, engineering activities will encompass creating technical specifications, reviewing and evaluating bid proposals, performing design reviews and providing technical oversight.  The successful candidate may also have opportunities to participate in supporting business development activities and emerging technology initiatives.

What you’ll be doing:  

  • Undertaking assigned electrical, instrumentation & controls engineering or multi-discipline small to medium sized projects for the fleet of power stations.
  • Supervising and performing engineering and project management work, as requested by clients across the business.
  • Providing technical leadership of assigned power generation engineering activities for the operating fleet; including supporting timely investigation & troubleshooting of electrical equipment problems and providing sound recommendations.
  • Researching and analyzing technical solutions and equipment options in terms of cost and performance for engineering projects.
  • Interpreting and applying industry standards and Heartland Generation best practices and methodologies to ensure code compliance but also balance cost, quality, and reliability objectives.
  • Supporting major maintenance activities such as turnarounds and unplanned outages at the plants, including development of work scopes and inspection plans.
  • Providing technical expertise to support interactions with regulatory bodies (AESO, AUC, etc.) and lead/assist with regulatory process execution from project inception to final completion.
  • Providing technical leadership for power generation project development activities including technology assessment, conceptual design, bid evaluation, and contract reviews.
  • Assessing, recruiting, and managing consultants, contractors and suppliers as required in fulfilling project resource requirements.
  • Promoting and reinforcing Heartland Generation’s Health, Safety, Security and Environment policies and procedures.

What you must have:

  • Electrical Engineering degree from a recognized post-secondary institution and registered as a Professional Engineer in good standing with APEGA, or other provincial Professional Engineering Regulatory Association and qualifies for inter-provincial mobility.
  • Minimum 12 – 15 years of relevant industry experience in thermal/gas fired power generation, or a comparable industry.  Consideration will be given to individuals with more extensive applicable experience.
  • Experience with power station operations, maintenance, development, construction, and commissioning is an asset.
  • Experience with Switchgear/MCCs, Motors, Generators, Transformers, Power System Analysis, Protection & Coordination, Turbine Control Systems, DCS, PLCs, Fire Alarm Systems and SCADA.
  • Familiarity with the Transmission/Distribution connection process in Alberta is an asset.
  • Self-starter who can work independently, is coachable, and is motivated to learn and develop.
  • Critical thinker with strong problem-solving skills.
  • Effective team player with strong interpersonal skills who leads by example.
  • Demonstrated ability to take ownership of assigned work.
  • Seeks feedback from other team members and clients to improve quality of deliverables; committed to building on existing and developing new expertise.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Familiar with the Canadian Electrical Code.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office and cloud-based software.
  • Project management training and experience is an asset.
  • Valid Class 5 driver’s license.

Where you’ll be working:

This position is based in Calgary and will require travel to remote site locations for field work up to 25% of the time.
